On the 29th July, 2017 Southern finally broke their drought of Premier titles with a victory over Harbour in the final at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Going into half-time, Harbour held a 12-10 lead but it was Mackenzie Haugh’s three-try haul that helped his side defeat Harbour 24-15 and win its first title in 10 years.

The women’s title that year went to Pirates after it beat rivals University win a 27 – 10 victory at Kettle Park.  Pirates victory that year was dedicated to their coach, Neville Haua, who died earlier that year and is still fondly remembered in rugby circles across Dunedin.
