It was the year of the Demon in 2016 club final as Kaikorai won the premier competition for the first time since 1997.
Kaikorai had surprised University the week before in the late semi final while Dunedin had won through with a victory over Harbour. In the final of 2016, the score was a 29-22 victory to Kaikorai with a late Dunedin try adding to a tense final few minutes.
