Alhambra Union v Otago University (15.05.21)

Around the grounds in premier matches this afternoon, Green Island were to strong for Alhambra Union at the North Ground winning 29 points to 20. At Bishopscourt Kaikorai suffered their first loss of the season going down to Dunedin 31 to 28 while at Watson Park Harbour defeated Zingari Richmond 40 to 17 and at Logan Park University were 35 to 12 winners over Taieri.

In the Premier Women’s grade this afternoon Otago University defeated Alhambra Union 46 to 33, Pirates had a narrow 27 to 25 win over Big River Country and the Waitaki Wahine won 102 to 10 over Green Island

Dunedin v Harbour (08.05.21)

Around the grounds in premier matches this afternoon, Dunedin grabbed a late try to flanker Tom Hume, which was then converted from the sideline by fullback Joshua Moorby to secure a 37 to 35 win. Trailing at halftime, a brace of tries brought Harbour back into the match before they took a 35 to 30 lead with under ten minutes to play. Dunedin however made the most of a penalty which saw Harbour’s Saula Mau sent to the sinbin. The resulting lineout then lead to the Hume try to draw the scores level. At Bathgate Park Southern defeated Zingari Richmond 50 to 17 while at the University Oval, Alhambra Union defeated University 30 to 28 in a dramatic finish. In the battle at Bishopscourt between the two unbeaten sides, Kaikorai won 27 to 19 to stay at the top of the table.

In the Premier Women’s grade this afternoon Alhambra Union defeated the Waitaki Wahine 49 to 17 in Oamaru while Univeristy 48 to 7 winners over Big River Country in Balclutha and at Hancock Park Pirates defeated Green Island 59 to 5.

Southern v Taieri (01.05.21)

Around the grounds in premier matches this afternoon, Southern turned a 18 to 7 halftime lead into a 35 to 28 win in a match that saw Southern dominate territory and possession in the first half. Taieri drew the scores close in the second half before late tries to Southern sealed the win. At Miller Park Green Island drew win Harbour 20 all, meaning Green Island retain the Speights Challenge Shield while at Montecillo University had a 40 to 17 victory over Zingari Richmond. In town at the North Ground Dunedin were victorious over Alhambra Union by 30 to 12.

In the Premier Women’s grade University defeated Alhambra Union 44 – 10 on Tuesday night while on Friday night in Oamaru the Waitaki Wahine had a big win over Big River Country running out winners 55 to 27. Today at the University Oval Pirates defeated University 37 to 33 while at Miller Park Alhambra Union had a 100 to 7 win over Green Island.

Around the grounds in premier matches this afternoon, Kaikorai defeated University 26 to 22 at Logan Park while over at the North Ground Alhambra Union were victorious over Southern with a 33 to 14 win. At Peter Johnson Park Green Island defeated Taieri 20 to 18 to win the Speights Challenge Shield while at Kettle Park Zingari Richmond ran out 17 to 16 winners over Dunedin. In the premier Women’s grade Pirates won on the road beating Waitaki Wahine 41 to 24 in Oamaru while in Balclutha Big River Country defeated Alhambra Union 41 to 29. In the other match Green Island defaulted to University.

Around the grounds in premier matches this afternoon, University defeated Harbour 47 to 38 at Forsyth Barr Stadium while over at Bishopscourt Kaikorai were victorious over Southern with a 27 to 25 win. At Peter Johnson Park Taieri defeated Dunedin 21 to 19 while at Montecillo Green Island ran out 50 to 24 winners over Zingari Richmond. In the premier Women’s grade University won on the road in Oamaru, beating the Waitaki Wahine 56 to 5. Down south in Balclutha Big River Country won 69 to 0 at home over Green Island while here in town Alhambra Union defeated Pirates 62 to 35 at the North Ground

To start the season I headed up to Opoho to see the start of the Premier Women’s competition. The new team in this year’s competition Big River Country from Balclutha. This now means that the Premier Women’s grade is covering from North Otago to South Otago which is great to see.

Around the grounds in other premier matches this afternoon, Harbour defeated Southern 26 to 22 at Watson Park while over at Miller Park Green Island were victorious over Alhambra Union with a 24 to 15 win. In a replay of last year’s final Taieri got up over University 27 to 24 while at Kettle Park Kaikorai defeated Dunedin 36 to 16
