Green Island v Taieri, Final, (31.07.21)Taieri celebrate winning the 2021 Banner

Taieri has won the 2021 Premier Banner with a 21 to 17 win over Green Island at Forsyth Barr Stadium this afternoon.

For the Taieri side, today’s win is their fifth banner in eleven years having previously won the title in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2020 and having made eight finals in the last eleven years. Leading 12 points to 10 at halftime, the Taieri side went on to claim the banner for the Peter Johnstone Park based side with a solid defensive effort.

Green Island vs Kaikorai, Semi Final (24.07.21)Sean Jansen of Green Island is caught in tackle during the Dunedin Premier club rugby semi final between Green Island and Kaikorai played at Miller Park in Dunedin.

Green Island and Taieri will clash in next Saturday’s club final after both sides recorded comprehensive victories in semifinals today.

Green Island got home at Miller Park as the No 1 ranked side produced a solid all-round display on the back of a dominant forward to secure a place in next week’s final. Leading 15 to 6 at the break, Green Island added 29 points in the second spell to record a 44 – 18 victory.

At the University Oval , Taieri led 22 to 3 at the break before adding 12 points in the second half to win 34 to 8 and book their place in the final.

Otago University vs Harbour (17.07.21)University supporters celebrate

Around the grounds in the Dunedin Premier competition this afternoon Green Island defeated Southern 28 points to 17 at Miller Park, while Otago University got home over Harbour 37 to 35 in tight encounter while at Peter Johnstone Taieri were 34 to 11 victors over Kaikorai. Next week in the semi finals Green Island will host Kaikorai and Otago University will be at home to Taieri.

Around the grounds in premier matches this afternoon, in the Central Otago competition the Preliminary Finals were played in Cromwell who hosted Arrowtown and in Queenstown, Wakatipu were at home to Upper Clutha. In Cromwell the home side went into half time with a 10 – 8 lead before going on to win 20 to 15. In Queenstown Upper Clutha lead 14 – 0 at half time and went onto win 20 to 5.

In the Dunedin Premier competition this afternoon Otago University won the prestigious V.G. Cavanagh Memorial with a close 21 to 20 win at the University Oval. At Bishopscourt Taieri were to strong for Kaikorai winning over 44 to 14, claiming the George Broadley Trophy. At Watson Park Harbour beat Green Island 35 to 19 while Dunedin defeated Zingari Richmond 39 to 17 at Kettle Park.

Around the grounds in premier matches this afternoon, at Outram Clutha prop Phil Keighley celebrated his 300th appearance for the club with an away match against West Taieri. At West Taieri dominated the first half scoring going into halftime with a 21 to 0 lead. In the second half, tries to the Clutha side made the scores close with 15 minutes to play. In the final ten minutes a late West Taieri try and then a penalty gave West Taieri a 29 to 20 win.

In the Dunedin Premier competition this afternoon Green Island won the Speight’s Jog, The Speight’s Challenge Shield and the Ken St Clair-Newman trophies with a 35 to 12 win over Kaikorai at Miller Park. Otago University were 38 to 10 victors over Alhambra Union, Southern defeated Harbour 14 to 9 while at Peter Johnson Park Taieri were 22 to 3 winners over Dunedin.

Semi Final Otago University v Alhambra Union (12.06.21)The Pirates squad celebrates winning the Dunedin Premier Women’s Final between Pirates and Otago University played at Hancock Park in Dunedin

Pirates have won the Dunedin Premier Women’s Final beating Otago University 29 to 26 in a thrilling match played at Hancock Park in Dunedin this afternoon

In a match that swung back and forth from the first whistle to the last, Pirates and Otago University produced what can only be described as a classic final. In the first half, both sides matched each other try for try until Otago University scored near the end of the half and took a 19 to 14 halftime lead. In the second with the scores once again locked up, it was Otago University lock Julia Gorinski who gave her side a 26 to 19 lead with 15 minutes remaining.

With less than 10 minutes to go in the match, Pirates pulled 5 points back with a try through their backs, ensuring the scores were close, right until the end. Then, with time up Pirates turn the ball over from a Otago University exit play for first five Victoria Subritzky-Nafatali to score the winning try.

Semi Final Otago University v Alhambra Union (12.06.21)Otago University Celebrate

The semi finals of the Premier Women’s division were played out across two venues this afternoon where top qualifier Pirates hosted Big River Country at Hancock Park and second qualifier Otago University were at home on the University Oval facing Alhambra Union.

Otago University and Alhambra Union produced a classic encounter that was every bit an arm wrestle right down to the final whistle. In a match that was low scoring but high in tension, the scores were locked at 15 all in the dying minutes of the game when suddenly Otago University snatched an intercept to score the match winning try.

Around the grounds in the premier men’s grade this afternoon, Green Island held onto the Speights Challenge shield and also won the Hellyer Memorial Trophy with a 68 to 14 victory over Zingari Richmond.

At Bathgate Park Southern were 32 to 10 winners over Dunedin and won the Ron Reggett Memorial Trophy. Kaikorai claimed the Murphy Memorial Trophy by defeating Alhambra Union 38 to 22 while at the University Oval it was Harbour who were victorious by defeating Otago University 10 points to 5.,

Around the grounds in the second round of matches for a double header weekend in the Women’s premier matches this afternoon, Pirates were to strong for Otago University winning 52 to 26 at Hancock Park while across town at the North Ground Alhambra Union defeated Green Island 52 – 17. In Kaitangata Big River Country were 46 to 21 victors over the Waitaki Wahine.

The latest results mean Pirates go to the top of the table on 43 points with Otago University one point behind on 42 points. Alhambra Union sit in third spot on 33 points while Big River Country are fourth on 31 points.

Around the grounds in premier matches this afternoon, Alhambra Union spoiled Dunedin’s 150th Anniversary celebrations with a 29 to 27 win at Kettle Park winning the Centennial Trophy. At Bishopscourt Kaikorai defeated University 22 to 8 while at Montecillo University defeated Zingari Richmond by 74 points to 15. At Peter Johnson Park Green Island won the Bezett Trophy and Robb Cup by defeating Taieri 35 to 30.

In the Premier Women’s grade this afternoon University defeated Big River Country 26 to 21. At Miller Park Pirates were victorious by 120 points to 7 over Green Island and Alhambra Union defeated the Waitaki Wahine 46 to 12.

Alhambra Union v Zingari Richmond (29.05.21)

Around the grounds in premier matches this afternoon, Zingari Richmond secured a win for Chris Bell in his 272 (breaking the Otago appearance record) game for the club and also the Grace Mills Trophy with a 21 – 20 win over Alhambra Union in wet and gloomy conditions at the North Ground. Heading into the last ten minutes Zingari held a 15 to 13 lead when a Shaun Driver penalty put the Dragons further in front 18 to 13. The Broncos then grabbed the lead back with a converted try to take a 20 to 18 lead heading into the final few minutes. It was then Zingari’s turn to take back the lead with another successful penalty which looked to have won the game for the Dragons until Alhambra Union won a penalty which looked very kickable for first five Levi Emery. However, his attempt bounced off the upright and over the dead ball line, starting the celebrations for the Zingari side.

At Bathgate Park Taieri won the Roy Nieper Trophy with a 22 to 10 win over Southern while at Watson Park Kaikorai were 22 to 17 winners over Harbour and at the University Oval Dunedin defeated Otago University by 18 points to 16.

In the Premier Women’s grade this afternoon University maintained their position at the top of the table with by defeating Green Island 53 points to 5 while Pirates ensured they stayed in second place on the table with a 40 to 5 win over the Waitaki Wahine. At Forsyth Barr Stadium Alhambra Union defeated Big River Country 34 to 31.
