Southern derbies between the Crusaders and Highlanders never fail to disappoint and neither did last nights clash in front of a crowd of almost 20,000 at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

With the Crusaders holding at 26 – 20 lead, under 10 minutes play and the Highlanders building on attack, the match looked like it would go down to the wire. However, it was the Crusaders who produced 14 points in the last 8 minutes of the match to claim a 40 – 20 victory.

Dunedin started the long awaited 2020 rugby season with a determined 21 – 16 victory of Taieri at Kettle Park yesterday.

With a strong wind at their back, Dunedin produced a tough defensive line to hold Taieri to only 3 points in the first half. Building many attacking phases, Taieri kept the ball in hand and showed plenty of attacking fair, producing numerous chances that were shut down by a tenacious Dunedin defense.

Holding an 11 – 3 lead at the break, Dunedin extended their lead playing into a strong wind when flanker Angus Duckett was driven over the line to score.

In other games around Dunedin, Southern beat Harbour 29 – 14 at Watson Park, University defeated Alhambra Union 32 – 13 at Logan Park while at Bishopscourt, Kaikorai beat Green Island 31-5.

The Premier Women’s competition also got underway yesterday with both Black Ferns and Otago Spirit players turning out for their clubs. At the University Oval the University side ran out 60 – 5 winners over the Waitaki Wahine and at Miller Park Pirates ran away with a 97 – 0 victory over Green Island.
